The Shed Tackle Drill

There are a number of different ways to run a good solid, fundamentally sound shed tackle drill.  Incorporating a popsicle sled that you can actually let the kids put their hands on and get off of is invaluable, in my opinion.  In this video, I share my favorite Shed Tackle Drill, which really focuses on explosion, escape and finishing through the tackle.

Important Shed Tackle Drill Coaching Points

#1  Take on the block first – put your eyes on the blocker, make sure you are attacking the man who is trying to keep you from making the tackle first

#2  6 inch explosion – as you take on that sled, you should see a big explosion for six inches, and when he contacts that sled you should see his arms and elbows tight, his hips rolling and feet exploding into that sled and the sled should respond by popping up into the air, and then the player closes by throwing the sled down.

#3  Create Separation – whenever you go to take on a block, you want to take the fight to the blocker.  If you can knock him back, you are going to get tot the football quicker.

#4 Escape the block – there are a number of different ways to escape the block, the biggest one being the “Dip and Rip”.

#5 Finish through the tackle
